CoqdOrRoomChicago – Drake Rye Whiskey. On Tuesday, March 15, 2016, The Drake will kick-off the first quarter Coq d’Or Whiskey Club Members event of 2016, by unveiling the prohibition-style rye whiskey custom-blended and distilled by Paul Hletko, founder of FEW™ Spirits, in conjunction with the hotel.

The Coq d’Or played a memorable role in Chicago, becoming the second establishment in the city to serve alcohol, when it opened to a line of thirsty patrons the day after the Repeal of Prohibition on December 6, 1933. The lines were so long that the bartenders only had time to pour whiskey at 40 cents a glass. Like the rest of the city, the Coq d’Or was equipped with an excess of 200,000 gallons of whiskey for the celebration that lasted until dawn.

“Today, The Drake acquires a new notable taste with a tailored prohibition-style rye whiskey crafted by the award-winning, local master distiller and whiskey advocate, Hletko of  FEW™ Spirits,” said Damien McArdle, general manager, The Drake Hotel. “The collaboration between our landmark hotel and this local artisan distiller is fueled by our mutual spirit for family tradition and our desire to craft Real Chicago™ experiences for our customers.”

As the Ambassador for the Coq d’Or Whiskey Club Members’ reception, Hletko will convey how his true grain-to-glass distillery, which ferments, distills, ages and bottles all of its products from scratch on-site, became the first (legal) alcohol production facility of any kind in Evanston, Illinois. Members will relate to his story by tasting flights of his artisan spirits commencing with The Drake Rye Whiskey made of 70 percent Midwestern rye, 20 percent local corn, 10 percent two-row malted barley and fermented with a wine yeast from France’s Loire Valley. Rounding out the palate, The Drake’s French Executive Chef Herve Cuyeu will prepare light hors d’oeuvres to compliment the whiskey profiles.

“As a kid, I would walk by The Drake Hotel with my grandparents and was in awe that such a place even exists.  Thus, I take great personal pride in working with these amazing professionals to create another piece of ™ history,” said Hletko. “I am honored to bring my family traditions to the distinguished Drake and hope guests will enjoy consuming it responsibly and in moderation, as much as we enjoyed making it.”

In homage to its Chicago roots, the FEW™ Spirits labels feature iconic images from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Likewise, The Drake’s label designed by Tony Keller of Studio Twelve 3 withFEW™ Spirits pays honor to its heritage depicting the legendary image of the Wyvern.

The Drake Rye Whiskey is available for purchase by the glass or bottle (46.5 percent ALC/VOL 93 Proof) in the Coq d’Or, as well as the other famed restaurants and lounges including, the nation’s first seafood themed restaurant since 1933, the Cape Cod Room, and the iconic afternoon tea and evening cocktail lounge adored by royalty and global travelers alike, the Palm Court.
